The credit card company will usually let you go over the limit as a courtesy to avoid embarrassment at the check-out or possibly stranding you in an emergency. You will pay a penalty for this because you are supposed to keep track of how close to the limit you are and stay below it. If you have a bad history with the company, they are likely to decline authorization on charges that will put you over the limit.

Don't put yourself in that situation, you never want to be that close to your limit.

I believe some cards allow you to go over your credit limit with purchases. I just dont see how anyone would forget how much they have on their card. Be careful with that because It will haunt you for years if you do.

Thats how they make money. They love when people go over their limit. They love it when you dont pay it off everymonth. They love it anytime you use it.
