why not rather, groom our kids into people that can live acceptively with others? Teach boys not to hit girls, etc,, etc,,

It makes sense. Prince Charming, heros and others. They are in books and girls dream about some day finding that one Prince or hero that will be right for her, but there was never any explanation on how to be one of those guys.
Girls grow up hoping for the perfect husband and boys have no idea how to be that.

I even today listen to fairy tales by my Granny. :) thats sweet
But now I'm a grown up and can differentiate between bad and good, reality and dream. If we tell our kids fairy tales then I believe in the end we shall tell them that its all fiction and nothing happens in real. BUT when a child grows up, s/he understand the challenges of life and they truly feel like molding their lives the same way they have heard in the fairy tales.
Children should be told the purpose of the story and after finishing the stories we should tell our kids that how good fought over bad and in the end, people get fruits after struggling so in real lives, we should always fight for the good. And if you want your Prince charming, then you should behave well, be nice to others, study hard. respect elders, be obedient and always be good.
Always give an explanation and exploration to your stories so that children can understand the reality.
By the way in today's time I believe children are not so good to listen to these stories...lolz

May be because of how I grew up I was not taught that. I was taught to grow up to become who I was because of who I am.
I was a late child of my parents. The youngest of 3 MUCH older brothers. The only girl. Never taught to think I should look for my prince charming. Rather taught just get out there and have fun and live life to the fullest.
Had a wonderful childhood! No fairy tales for me!

True...
We should teach our children how to cook, clean, fix cars, play sports.... Both Males & Females.
This way, Our kids will grow up realising that real life is no fairy tale.
A man can be impressed if you can help him fix the car... And best of all Prince charming can cook you a beautiful dinner.

The fairy tales are just that! They are used to stimulate the imagination and not to pattern your life or expectations around*
I don't think any of us girls are really expecting to really meet a Prince Charming! Maybe just a man with some of those qualities!

this is a good question.
they should teach boys how to be romantic. a little romance goes a long way.
BUT, they should also quit feeding girls fairy tales. what man can live up to a prince charming or knight in shining armor? it's unrealistic.

The question makes perfect sense to me! My son (6) is in the "Spiderman" stage right now, but, he cleans his own room, takes a shower by himself and is very cooperative in the house. My daughter (7) is in the "poet" and "rainbow stage" and also, very independent and cooperative in this household of mine.
To answer your question, I want to add : "By being a good parent, your kids won't have later in life have so many doubts of what a boy or a girl are supposed to do in life."

My brother contributes his good upbringing to me. I told him what kind of gentleman to be around ladies. He sure is a schmoozer now with them. My husband is a gentleman also, he never checks out other women. He is a very good man.
