The majority of American films have no people of color.
Even like the modern version of Stepford Wives, which is suprising given a line in the original.

But the Color Purple, Roots, and To Kill a Mockingbird, as Well as Huck Finn, all have memorable scenes of racism.
All inspired by books too.

Gone with the Wind has several interesting stories:
-Hattie McDaniel, first black person to win an Oscar, couldn't go to the premiere at an all white Atlanta Theatre, but greeted Clark and Vivien at the entrance with a big smile.
-Butterfly McQueen gave up acting after being typecast.

To this Day, WALT DISNEY, refuses to release Song of the South, because of issues of stereotypes and racism.

A brilliant film on the other night called Scum about a boys borstal.
It's a good example because it's an older film that would never be made to day, there are some black guys there and it covers language of the time, how black people were treated, things that would never be allowed in a film today.

I taught in a college before I retired and know the line they want you to follow. I can give you outline cases but you would have to look up more deatils on the net. Try:
Idi Amin's ejection of the asians from Africa in the 1970/80s
The recent civil war in the Congo
The present situation at Darfor (I hope thats spelt correctly)

Don't let the lecturers fob you off by changing your chosen examples- John 16 years a college lecturer.

Gone with the Wind -
Racial politics spilled into the film's premiere in Atlanta, Georgia. As Georgia was a segregated state, Hattie McDaniel could not have attended the cinema without sitting in the "colored" section of the movie theater; to avoid troubling Selznick, she thus sent a letter saying she would not be able to attend. When Clark Gable heard that McDaniel did not want to attend because of the racial issue, he threatened to boycott the premiere unless McDaniel was able to attend; he later relented when McDaniel convinced him to go.[13]

At the costume ball during the premiere, local promoters recruited blacks to dress up as slaves and sing in a "Negro choir" on the steps of a white-columned plantation mansion built for the event. Many black community leaders refused to participate, but prominent Atlanta preacher Martin Luther King, Sr. attended, and he brought his 10-year-old son, future civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., who sang that night in the choir.

The film also resulted in an important moment in African-American history: Hattie McDaniel won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, the first time an African-American actor received the award.

Pleasantville - bit hollywood - but I used it for an essay myself. Very good for examples of people learning to accept differences in their society, it shows examples all kinds of prejudice.

One film we had to watch at university was "Cannibal Holocaust" - a film about a trip a bunch of white ignorant kids make to Africa, and the misperceptions people had over African tribes they came across. Very explict and gross film, actually banned in the 60's or 70's.

A great book for showing these misperceptions - and racism is "Heart of Darkness"
