I heard a young couple say,"well, family first, right?" while worriedly paying a huge grocery bill for Thanksgiving...

I suggest that its ok to overspend occasionally, so long as it is not a habit. A budge tis meant to be followed. In almost every circumstance you can find a way to stay within your budget while perhaps sacrificing some luxuries or comforts.
If you are doing ok financially, its alright to be flexible. But if you are in a bad financial situation, its better to keep the self control and try to stay on budget. Too many people claim they need to be "pampered" or are "exhausted". Really this means they are not willing to sacrifice to live within their means and want to keep up with what they feel is owed to them. Circumstances to break the budget should be rare.

"Are you at all concerned with our unsustainable debt and budget?" Sure, I've been concerned about it for 20 years... nothings been done... we are still here, so I suspect we'll still be here in 8 more years too. At least the money being spent now has a definite purpose for the good of the country's own citizens. The projections for the last administrations' spending by the year 2010 was also completely out of control. Nothing Obama has done has really changed that significantly in either direction. "True American Patriot, the Republicans had the majority in Congress for the first time in 40 years during those successful Clinton years" Not all of them... the budget came under control when the democrats still had the majority in the house. And yes, congress holds the purse strings (aka allocates the money), but the president doesn't have to sign the bill (aka spend the money) So, it could be equally argued that Clinton vetoing Republican bills was the reason the budject was balanced... It's really amusing that dems or reps (of which I am neither) have this thing where, if something good happened, it's always because of (According to them) "their party" holding one of the branches of government, and suddenly, for the sake the the current argument, that this good thing happened 'because that branch of government -really- has all the control..' Just like people constantly blame Obama for spending, and then turn around and say "congress is in control of spending" when they want to argue that it was the congress that balanced the budget in the Clinton years (Even thought it was balanced before they got there)... OK fine... if you want to argue that, then you certainly can't blame Obama now... It's like stay consistent.. truth even.. doesn't matter to you all when you want to 'make a point'. This is why I can never rightly join a political party' I believe they are a pox on this nation, as they deliberately give rise to, and help support the belief that sustaining power is more important than telling the honesty truth.

When I'm on vacation I'll spend more to have experiences that can't be duplicated at home. This might translate to staying in a really awesome hotel, snorkeling with dolphins or visiting a tiger reserve. If it's truly a once in a lifetime event, I'll certainly splurge.

I have two kids and food is a big thing, we went from $100 per week for two adults, to $120 with a daughter (formula fed) to $200 per week with two kids (one a breast fed boy).
We will always buy the food we need for the kids no matter what the budget looks like.

I don't do a budget, and I'm good about keeping track of my dollars, but when I am shopping for gifts for special people, unless it's a totally outrageous price, if it's the right gift, it's sold.

When buying Christmas gifts and also when I'm on vacation is when I spend the most. Other than that I'm big on saving money and socking it away in my bank and investments.

usually when we are tired and when we need to pamper ourselves, spend more than what we should so that we get recharged and energised.
