I just watched Gladiator and thought the end was great, still fighting and trying to walk through the door. Can you tell me your fave movie death scene?

Sonny's death scene in The Godfather has got to be one of the greatest death scenes ever. Fredo's death on the lake wasnt as powerful as Sonny's death scene but it was great nonetheless because you realized Michael was indeed a Corleone in every sense of the word..to have a hit put out on his own brother

Also, the scene in the beginning of Scarface where Tony is forced to watch his friend get cut up by an electric saw. The scene was shot perfectly because it was gripping and you knew it was horrific just from looking at Tony's facial expressions. Another great one from Scarface is of course the ending when Tony yells 'say hello to my little friend' and dies moments later from a gun shot wound from behind. When he falls in the pool of blood with his blue suit on..it is so symbolic of the american dream gone terribly wrong.

I agree about Maximus' death scene in Gladiator...

Lord of the Rings- The Fellowship of the Ring when Borimir dies from dozens of arrows

Star Wars- Episode I when Darth Maul is unexpectedly cut in half by Kenobi

There are so many great death scenes and too many to name...another one that I love is from The Man in the Iron Mask when D'Artagnan dies.

Psycho (1960) ~ Imagine the shock back then as the audience settled in for a story of how this lady is going to repent her crime. Then... Dirty Mary Crazy Larry (1974) ~ WOW! Others that come to mind are: Kirk Douglas' character in Saturn 3 Radha Mitchell's character in Pitch Black Barry Miller's character in Saturday Night Fever Richard Jaeckel's character in Sometimes a Great Notion ~ This is a painfully drawnout death though. The situation does occur suddenly, and we think a rescue is at hand. Then, the inevitability of what is going to happen creeps in for a grueling wait. Anyone who has seen this movie will vividly recall the scene even decades afterward.

I'm a fan of the classics - black and white originals. A couple of scenes stick in my mind:

1) James Cagney in White Heat (1949) Cagney is on top of a huge gas storage tank and says "Made it Ma, Top of the World" before the whole thing explodes.
2) Edward G. Robinson in Little Caesar (1930) Last line of Caesar as he was shot by police “Mother of Mercy, is this the end of Rico?”
3) The death scene in Citizen Kane (1941) the scene when Kane dies - last word "Rosebud".

There are many more but these occur to me off the top of my head:)

The movie 300 has tons of death scenes. All of which are brilliantly done. The death scene of Sirius Black in Harry Potter is also notable.

My all time vote goes not to a movie, but to a mini series.

The death portrayed by Brian Blessed in I Claudius has no peer on film. It's the most riviting 3 minutes you'll ever see.

Boromir In the fellowship of the rings (even though it should have been in the Two Towers) Sean Bean is a Great actor. I’m still hopping they will remake the Odyssey with him as Odysseus

The death scene of Paul “Pee-Wee Herman” Reubens as the vampire henchman in the movie version of Buffy the Vampire Slayer is beyond awesome.

Pretty much every death in Robocop is good, especially the bloke who melts from toxic waste and gets splattered by a van & the man who gets it at the beginning from Ed-209... Class!

There's a scene in the hospital where a guy (or girl not sure) gets sucked into a turbine and is basically liquefied! Check out the trailer. The movie is called Bad Dreams.
