Its a search for answers to life's biggest questions- who are we? Where did we come from? Where are we going?
The universe is a big place to be alone in- we could use some companions!

No, it is the search for intelligent entities that did not evolve on Earth. In other words, it is a search for intelligence that is NOT us.
This is one of those horrible philosophical statements that sounds really deep, but makes no sense under logical scrutiny. If I am looking for another person, I am not looking for me, am I?
