I'm Argentine, and I think that most people still claim the Falklands because of national pride. However, the real interest in the Falklands, the thing that the government noticed, is the petroleum. Since Russia came with the idea of claiming the bottom of the sea in the north pole, every country is now thinking in conquering land under the sea (specially in polar regions).

first of all i don't care if the British ownED the Falklands in 17what ever the fact remains that the British, Spanish, french,German and other European countries ownED a lot of modern countries. they should give them up and they have mostly. but they cling on to some of them in some misguided attempt to remember "the good old days" when Britain WAS important. i think that the British have mis placed sense of importance. for example if the Argentinians are dirty cheating lying people because the what to get their land from the British what are all the other countries in the world like America who got their Independence from Britain? are they thieves because originally the land belonged to Britain?if you go back enough in history you will see that a lot of countries were owned by other countries but that does not make them their property now. e.g Britain was conquered by the Romans does that mean that Britain is owned by Italy. i think you people should get a grip and stop mouthing off about things that u have not thought through.

PS. don't slang me off just because it told you i few home truths.

well.. there are some geographical reason showing why Argentina claims Falklands (Malvinas). Uk keep on with a sort of funny Imperial politics, keeping territories alsot unhabitated that, geographically, are into the sphere of influence of other countries. Malvinas , for example, but also Gibraltar. In theory it could be done, and seems correct with formal international laws, but creates a huge quantity of troubles (Especially when it influence oil production rights) those solution could be bloody and very very veryexpensive. I suggest you to make the question of Falklands/Malvinas in Yahoo Argentina. You could have some different answers..
Good Luck

the answer is more political the geograpical.

the argentinian right wing junta that came to power were extremely unpopulal at the time and were in fear of a rising by the people in order to unite the country behind them and show there strength to its own people in particular they chose the falklands to invade

the u.k. under maggie thatcher had begun scaling down its military and military spending hit an all time time low at this period due to economic recession so argentina invaded the malvinas/falklands to unite the country behind the government as would normally be the case in times of war thinking that britain would not really confront it due to its military scale down this back fired and the argies lost

This is remnant of imperialism and is out of date in the 21st century.
They should be offered a referendum to decide whether they want independence or to be allowed to emigrate to Britain for those who cannot live without British nationality.
It would save the taxpayer millions of pounds.
