So what values could we strive after, which will go above material values? If we die, we cannot take money or fame or material wealth with us. Which sort of values would make sense even after we lost our physical body, assuming you believe in life after death?

We can make the cycle of birth and death an evolution of spirit. We do this by using an intelligent birth like that of the human form, to cultivate an understanding of the eternal.

We advance from the mundane to that which is more lasting. We then advance from that which is more lasting to that which is eternal.

Associate with the eternal.

We can cultivate values such as patience, tolerance, self-control, equanimity, mercy, charity, cleanliness, truth and education. This is keeping in harmony with our true eternal self which is all godly. However, we need to cultivate values such as these for the sake of the Supreme and not material ambition. Then we are realizing our eternal self that is all godly possessing all values or virtues.

We can do it in one human birth, but the more we try to reawaken our eternal self, the more we succeed, the more we will be in touch with our eternal self life after life.

If you don't believe there is an eternal self, an eternal soul or even an eternal God, a Supreme Being; then, what is the quality of our love? How lasting is our love? How true is our love? Have you asked if it possible to have a loving propensity that is eternal?

Life after death is a direct self-contradiction... as death by definition is the termination of life.

That aside.... eternity is likewise a fallacy. Forms and values are not eternal. Everything is, by nature, in a state of change.... from the tangible down to the metaphorical and metaphysical. It is finite and vague in its boundaries.
Only valuelessness will persist. Only separating ourselves from the concepts of what we think we know and believe will do anything for us. Only once all ties with the life we have experienced are severed in their entirety do we find smooth and total dissolution.

Since I can't "for the life of me" imagine eternity or nothingness I'll have to say, in so far as I can imagine being and not being, the human values of 1. Love of Life. 2. LOVE OF LOVE!

Good luck with your values, good mental health, peace and Love!

a lot of values are what are called intangible; love, trust, respect, common courtesy and such.

somewhere in the bible, it is written "judge not lest ye be judged" and not to be looking at the sliver in your brother's eye while you have a log in yours.
another interesting point is that when Jesus walked among humanity, he made an important amendment to the commandments. that is to love one another indiscriminately. "if you only love those who love you, you accomplish nothing. if you love even those who would hate you, you accomplish much"

that's all that i'll venture at this time.

leave good impression on minds of the people among whom you will live as nobody remembers a person but what impression he leaves. For that you have to be selfless service oriented.

Those that abide : Love ( for all ) , Truth , Goodness .

( Incidentally , I never heard of our being able to take our education with us : what do you do , bury Grandpa's Degree with him ? )
When the physical brain dies , our psyche , with all its memories, experience , etc perishes too .
