Snopes is a very reliable website. And it's widely read, so it has the advantage of being peer reviewed. If there's a mistake on there someone will point it out, and they'll correct it.

snopes.com is one of my favorite resources for finding out about Internet hoaxes. about.com also has an extensive hoax section.
