something I confess ive never understood-like a balloon inflating there must be a point where the armies are stretched too much and burst-they could never have taken over the whole world.

It must be understood that both Germany and Japan had long histories of militarism and service to the state going back for centuries. The German officer corps went through the most rigid and grueling training with a very large part in the classroom studying strategies and tactics and they were encouraged to be creative. The Japanese were not quite as creative, but were severe warriors and never thought about surrender.
The Italians on the other hand, were great warriors 2 thousand years prior, but not during WW II. They had no stomach for war, Mussolini made a big mistake bringing Italy into the war.
Only the Germans secretly rebuilt their military which ran counter to the treaty of Versailles of 1919. Most Germans at the time thought it only fair that the fatherland take its place as a world power, not knowing what Hitler had planned in the future.

Not just strong, but new. After WW1 the German army, in effect, no longer existed. During the 30s, Germany began re-arming, but in secret (Hiding AA guns up chimneys, etc). Their technology was modern.

The Spanish civil war gave them the opportunity to try out new techniques and adopt a combined arms phillosophy. Blitzkrieg. However, the machinery was not that good. Many of Germanys bombers started life as "Fast mail planes". Although they had been designed to be able to convert them for war use, they lacked the built in armour, etc of other planes. The Pzr III, the mainstay of German armour, was not that great either. The T34 came as a nasty surprize, as did the KVI. However, there is an account of a single KVII holding up an entire panzer Dvn for 2 days.

The Italians were not so fortunate. Although they had numbers, their machinery was out of date and generally rubbish.

Japan, although it had the technology to start with, did not have the industrial capacity to support a long drawn out war.

In all cases, they bit off more than they could chew. Japan could not compete with American logistics. An early report, written by Manstien, predicted Russias potential war production capacity, based on converting existing tractor and motor vehicle factories. This was dismissed as scare mongering.

It wasnt just Germany. Italy fielded many a army. Typically they surendered and were more of a liability, Italians were what got the Germans in North Africa and Greece.
Also Spain, France, belgium, Lithuania, Norway, Sweden, etc all had SS divisions fighting with the Germans. Even middle easterners fielded a SS regiment. Further Romania added close to a half a million men. It was the Romania who failed the Germans at Stalingrad. The Czechs built tanks for Germany. Contrary to narrow minded American propaganda this was really a world war and not Germanys attempt to dominate the earth. It was a war between Nationalists and Globalists (called then internationalists). Communism and Capitalism were globalists and thats why they fought side by side. Most in europe fought against the spread of Communism. In the spainish revolution they saw the communist rape and kill nuns, burn churches and knew what a threat it was and fought to destroy it. After WWII many a nun were prego from being raped by the invading Russians.
Note after WWII America supported the Communists of China and helped them defeat the Chinese Nationalists Chian Kai-shek leader of the chinese nationalists who retreated to Taiwan in 1949. America makes funny bed fellows but clearly has been strongely against Nationalism, so american flagwavers beware. You live in a global society here no flags of national color wanted, unless there is a war. Note even the average russian fought for Mother Russian, and not global communism. Germans fought for the Fatherland not to take over the world. Communism was a very real threat to western civilization in 1939.

The three nations you have mentioned all were in a state of social and political upheaval in the 1920's and 1930's. The leaders of these nations twisted the situation and circumstances of their conditions into hatered of others and National pride. Each instituted a political machine based on Militarism and built a very strong military force. Each structured youth organizations that glorified Military might and this produced youth eager to enter into their nations armies.
During this time of military build up the rest of the nations were attempting to get a handle on their unemployment problems and the other effects of the economic depression and were spending their monies on social programs and all but ignoring their military. During times of 'peace' most nations allow their military powers to become weak and fall behind on weapons technologies.
SO the nations that impress you are nations that basically sucker-punched the rest of the world. The Nations of military might at this time turned their energies and finances toward becoming warlords while the rest of the world was attempting to help their citizen during times of financial and economic crises.
A. Governments were instituted to serve as protectors of their people.
B. The Governments that so impress you caused the near complete annihilation of it's people.

Select from A. or B. as the nation that most fits your desired government.

Only got your first 4 1. Simple Hitler had his lover the leader of the SA Rolm killed. Nazism as you know was a cult filled with young Aryan boys. Need I say more. 2. After the fall of Wall Street, known as Black Sunday, many countries saw how useless the free market is. Get extra points by comparing that to the present. For example we are experiencing this now with the rise of Putin in Russia. Basically if Palin is not elected Putin will run the world from his Ice Castle in Siberia. 3. Pretty simple, the Japanese and their ancient sect of Wasabi took control of Kathmandu in Mongolia. The Italians finally got the trains to run on time and turned to diving as a national past time while playing futbol. 4. Pretty simple they were appeasers. Flat out appeasers. They kept appeasing and being appeasers. Appeasers of what? Doesnt matter they were appeasers.

hitler and germany had a strong army due to

1. after ww1 germany was only allowed have an army of 100,00 0 people this meant that germany picked the best soldiers to enter its ranks

2. germanys generals had under marshal manstein developed the tactics of fast mechanical tanks followed by air bombardment and troops - blitzkrieg - in order to account for its lack of men. the west was still looking at modern warfare in terms of holding ground as in ww1

3. germany was the first country to bring the blitzkrieg doctrine in to being thus produced more and better tanks at the period pre-1939

4. the german army when it secretly esculated its armed services above 100,000 had the best trained troops teaching new recruits thus passing on superior methods whereas the west had mainly poorly trained conscription

5. and this point cannot be emphasised enough the ideology of the german (and japanese) was so total that they belived that the were superior and couldnt lose they believed that they had to right a wrong caused by the ww1 loss and it was there duty to win at all costs or die for germany.

japans troops were also brilliant due to.

1. its ideology that the emperior was a god and they were surving there god if they died they would be rewarded and that asia belonged to the japanese to rule

2. the samuri mentality that it was honourable to die for your superiors

3. history - a self confidence in japanese might japan believed
that bbecause they had never in the countries history lost a battle that they were blessed with a divine people and army

as for the italian there army was pretty awful they couldnt even take greece without german intervention

well at the beggining of the war each had a carefully crafted war machine. you have to keep in mind the general populace had no idea about the holocaust going on. then take into account that each respective group acheived total surprise. once you occupy a place you go onto defense, and it takes less to defend, as you should know. so by the time all of thier forces got thin, it wasn't taking as many troops to do the job anyways. the only reason it took so long to root them all out was the fact that they were dug in.

They secretly (and also not secretly) supervised the building those armies for years. Besides, there were also Nazi sympathizers (like G.W. Bullshit's grandfather) who conducted illegal business and passed military secrets to Nazi Germany.
