After I've answered the phone and found the call to be an unsolicited and unwanted sales call I tell the caller to hang on a second, there's someone at my door and put the phone down and just leave it there for ages.

With junk mail I just put everything that arrives back into the pre-paid envelope and post it back usually I write 'have your muck back, enjoy the postage'.

I have my phone registered on the BT database, this prevents cold calling to the house and is an offence for any company to do so. If one rings by mistake which is about once every 2 years i point out I'm on the database and they can't get off the phone quick enough.

I tell them I am not the person to talk to as my husband deals with all the money issues in our house and makes all those kinds of decisions. I think they feel so sorry for the brow beaten woman on the end of the phone that they just ring off.

I usually say no thank you and hang up. My sister went one better when someone called selling conservatories. She let them do the selling spiel, told them she was very interested and even suggested someone should call, but said there was one thing bothering her. How do you fit a conservatory on to a first floor flat? The seller took it in good humour saying 'Nice one'.

I usually say I'm sorry did you say you were the probate officer. Because the person that you are after died in an accident at the weekend. Horrible I know but it gets them off the phone and they will stop calling your number

You can either hang up, not answer...or my favorite is having some fun with it.
Like ask obnoxious questions, repeat everything they sell or try to sell them something.
I know it's kind of wasting your time but it is fun to do sometimes when there's nothing else going on.

Tell them I'm not interested and goodbye. I do sometimes get the urge to say something like "Where did you get this number? Go straight to your supervisor and tell him/her that Special Branch will be there in 3 minutes and that no-one is to leave the building until they have been investigated" So far I've resisted, but one day ... If anyone else wants to try it please do, and let me know how it goes.

I ask them if they can hold.....

Just leave the phone sitting on the arm of the chair until they get fed up and hang up ;0)

Pick up the receiver and drop it to the cradle...if you are in the US add your phone # to the Do Not Call Registry, won't stop all of them but will stop a large number, free sign up and it is legit...you should also add you cell as now some companies are getting those numbers...

Cheerfully, I pipe up in the middle of their talk, and say "Oh, thank you for calling, but I'm not interested right now." and then I hang up. The cheefulness throws them off. I don't wait until they are done - just throw it out there as soon as you can.
