The UK for these reasons;
1. Holds a permanent seat on the UN Security Council.
2. Has an operating military that has the ability to project force worldwide.
3. Has a natural resource base to fall back on. Japan doesn't, other that coal.
4. No questions asked defense treaty with the US and Australia.
5. Holds a seat on NATO and on the EU

I would say the UK. Its currency is the most powerful in the world and it has strong allies in Europe. Japan does have a good economy, but so does the UK. Also the UK has a standing Army which under its constitution Japan cannot. Although, they both have a close Gross Domestic Product and Human Development Index. If it where a person by person count Japan has more than twice the population of the UK.

Well in terms of economic standing and current trends neither country has enough money to fight each other. But give it a couple of years and the both will be back on its feet. But I think Britain would win with the best training, and up to date weaponry. Plus Europe versus Japan? Europe never works together with anything, bar the odd war with ourselves (such as ww1/2). Why do you think the EU is so unpopular? Plus Britain and Japan, other than WW2, have never really been at war. They were allies in WW1, so there is little reason for a war between the two.

I would say Japan, think of it when was the last time a financial crisis in Britain caused problems around the world. Not for a long time i would suggest. While if Japan's trade goes down such as after that earthquake in the nineties that caused problems to all the tiger economies in Asia and from there the rest of the world economies.

Probably UK because:
- UK's economy, although smaller, is in a much better shape than Japan's;
- UK is USA's closest ally;
- UK has one of the top 5 armed forces in the world;
- UK is a nuclear power, Japan is not;
- UK has some oil, Japan doesn't;
- Japan is loosing influence in Asia (and in the rest of the world) to China.

Japan. UK might have been in the past, but now Japan has the latest technology and even their products, cars and stuff, are more selling. It's a more disciplined country, in terms of health and all

Economicly - Japan.
Militarily - Britian.
Politically - Britian
Over all: Britian,
Britian has more influence in the world , than Japan does.
Part is from being a permanent member of the Security Council.
And part from thier historical ties and influence around the globe.
