A Canadian 50 cent piece is worth 1/2 of a Canadian dollar. Now that I've had my fun, I'll try to answer your incomplete question. Since you neglected to mention which country's currency you want it in, I'm going to assume the United States Dollar is the currency you want. The current exchange rate between Canadian Dollars and U.S. Dollars is 1 USD = 1.2214 CAD or 1 CAD = 0.818665 USD So, a Canadian 50 cent coin in the US would be worth 0.4093325 US Dollars, or about 41 cents. Whoever told you it would be worth $20 US clearly has no idea what they're talking about.

You need to contact a Coin Dealer where you live; there are too many variables you don't mention that would need answering before giving a definitive answer.

Maybe by a coin collector.
If you didn't know, cleaning your coins damage and reduce their value.
