I have a benzene ring with a -CO2CH3 (ester) at position one, and a -NO2 group at position three and five...is this more polar or less polar compared to:
a benzene ring with only the -CO2CH3 group
and a benzene ring with the -CO2CH3 group and one NO2
group at the third position?

Treat this as a problem in vector addition. The answer will depend on the numerical values that you use for the polarity of the nitro group and the ester group.
