I have a California Kingsnake, aged about 10 months.

It is in very good health, eats well, sheds well, is tame, does all the things it is supposed to do. As a result I have had no reason to take it to the vet. I have no desire to traumatize my snake unnecessarily by taking it to the vet.

The snake has not been probed, so I don't know what sex it is.

It is now about two feet long, and its body is getting fairly fat compared to its head. Its tail tapers very quickly rather than gradually tapering.

Without advising me to get it probed, what gender would you guess it is?

because you say that the tail tapers quickly, I would surmise it is a female.

if you're not nervous about the possibility of getting nipped you can try to manually evert the hemipenes. By holding the main part of the body in one hand and applying gentle pressure near the cloaca while slightly bending the tail backwards, many young males will evert their hemipenes, females will not. But I strongly suggest seeing it done before attempting it, because if it isn't done properly, it will stress, and possibly cause injury to your snake

I would go the the vet. If you probe your snake wrong you can (besides geting the sex wrong) kill the snake. Let the vets do it don't risk killing the snake just to sex it.
