Istanbul, the present capital of Turkey was first called Byzantium. When Constantine became the Emperor of the Eastern Roman empire, he named it New Rome but later the city adopted the name of Constantinople in honor of Constantine. It was given its present name by the Ottoman Turks when they conquered it in 1453.
