What if scientists discover a life form out in space? However, the life form is humanoid and were 100 times bigger than us humans on earth. Do you think we should try and make contact with this other life form? Wouldn't there be a big chance they would smash us like ants without any interest to learn from us?

It depends on how technologically evolved they are; if they are more advanced than us, they we should seek to be on friendly terms.

If they are less evolved, I think we should try to research them and observe their behavior.

The problem with all contact questions is that the distance is so great. The nearest star to our sun is Alpha Centauri, which is 4.22 light years away.

There is no current technology available to study distant planets in that detail (SETI might be able to gather information through radio waves, I guess?), the best that we could do at this point is to detect the effect of their planets gravity on its sun (or suns) using the red shift Doppler effect.

If they could somehow discover this race of mighty men, then I suppose that we would try to study them and indeed make contact. That is after all the big question here on earth, are we alone?

Finally any civilization that is technologically advanced enough to traverse deep space, would be able to do what ever they wanted to us, although we could destroy our planet to keep it from the monster men. Lets hope their the advanced peace loving scientist types and not the evil empire.

Ha ha, I've wondered the same thing myself. There really is no answer.

But personally I've wondered on a much larger scale. What if we found life billions and billions times bigger than us? Or on the other end of the spectrum billions and billions times smaller than us? Like way smaller than the simple atoms and molecules we now know of that make all matter?

Well the truth is we don't know and probably never will at least not in our life time. We don't even know how large the universe is or if it is even finite at all. It very well could go on for ever and ever.

Depends on the psychology of the alien, not just how big they are. They mgiht not think like us.

Also, if they tried to smash us, we would not fight with our fists. We would use missiles and bombs to destroy them. You can be as big as you want, doesn't matter if I drop a nuke on you. In short, the determining factor will be which side has better technology.

A war with aliens would be fought mailny in space, not the ground. But the dsitances involved are so mind-boggling it's hard to imagine a full blown war ever happeining.

If there was only a single one, the ethical and morally sound course of action would be to attempt to establish some sort of communication. If that works, it could be the beginning of a peaceful coexistence, or it could lead to an inter-species war. If we are unable to communicate, it would almost certainly lead to war. Since attempting communication is far more likely to result in peace, we should try and make contact.

A fisherman "discovered" a fish that was thought to be extinct over a century ago. We need look no further than our own back yard, the oceans (Madagascar) to find "new" life forms.
