I cant seem to find just a straight answer anywhere of how far a pc card will reach. ... say i live on a quarter acre lot and i were to put a pc card into my laptop how far would the signal reach reach.. one house over , two houses etc..

You won't get a straight answer because it depends on a lot of things.
The only real way of finding out is trial and error (though it should still get some reception a couple of houses over but no guarantee on that, also don't expect low signal strength to result in high speed).

It varies, it depends on model, distance, interference, things blocking the way such as walls etc.
I have a wireless network adapter downstairs and sometimes it is hard to get signal in my room upstairs and it is a small house.
