Back in the day, when I lived in Winnipeg when the Jets were still around, the home team always wore whites. In the 90s (I think) they changed it so that home teams would wear their colors much like the NFL does for the most part. With the advent of the 3rd jersey, all bets were off.

Now we are have the new Rbk Edge jerseys and each team is back to two jerseys. I thought that colors were to be worn at home and whites as has been the latest practice BUT I have seen a few games where the home team has worn white. Example: Last night, watching the Leafs/Habs game, they were playing in Toronto, yet the Leafs were wearing their whites. Most games I have seen thus season, home team has worn their colors, but there have been a few expections.

My question is, is their any rhyme or reason to which jerseys the teams are wearing or are the NHL & Reebok just trying to market both jerseys at home? Does anyone have any info? Thanks!

With the exception of a 33 year period (1970-71 through 2002-2003, NHL teams have historically worn their dark jerseys at home (57 years out of 90). Starting with this season, the home team has the right to wear whichever colour jersey they want, and are required to give the away team about a week's notice. The idea over the course of the year is that fans will see both their teams and thier division rivals home and away colours both.

1) During the 33 year period where teams wore white at home, the fans wanted to see the dark uniforms based on feedback presented by fans to all teams
2) During the 33 year period where teams wore white, jersey sales of coloured jerseys represented 63% of jersey sales (this has since risen to 68%)

Note: There are some teams wear their white unis outsell the dark, Toronto and St. Louis are two of these teams, and the Gretzky era Kings. Some teams like the Penguins, Rangers, and Islanders have over 80% coloured jersey sales.

The general rule in place now is that the home team wears colors and the away time whites. This started in the 2003-04 season, and was a reversal of the old scheme (home-whites/away-colors). One rationale of having a system in place, is that it helps travelling teams who would only need to bring one set of jerseys on a road trip. This also made sense with the third jersey program, since most third jerseys were colors -- tying in to marketing to fans at home, to increase jersey sales.

However for every rule there are exceptions. Teams can always mutually agree to switch, an example being if they are playing back-to-back games. Third jerseys will enter the mix again before long too - some say as soon as the 2008-09 season. Regardless of when it happens, the home-colors/away-whites paradigm should be maintained, subject of course to those pesky exceptions.

Some teams agree to have a jersey switch day so that all the teams can see all the jerseys in the league a few times. The pacific division does it twice per team. Ex. Sharks wore white at home against phoenix and L.A.

It was white at home until last year if I remember right. They do have games when they still do this.I know the Bruins have 3 different jerseys. One white, one black and one gold.It may depend on whether there is a special promotion or event taking place too.For example, the retirement of a number.
