Israel was the ancient homeland of the Jews. In the Wilkipedia, free encyclopedia, it is stated that the United Nations took action in 1947 in the form of approving the partition of the mandate of Palestine into two states, one Jewish and one Arab. Thereafter, by May 14, 1948 Israel declared their Independence and themselves a state.

On Nov.29, 1947 the UN General Assembly adopted the Partition Plan, according to which the British Mandate would end and the country partitioned into two states - a Jewish state and an Arab (Palestinian) State. Jerusalem was to be an international city. By and large the Jews accepted partition(and celebrated that night with dancing in the streets) , while the Arabs rejected the plan and tried to prevent it's implementation by force, thus initiating the war of 1948-1949.
In May 1948, while fighting was raging throughout the country and the British were completing their withdrawal, Israel declared it's independence. It was immediately attacked by the surrounding Arab countries, seeking to prevent the survival of the infant state.

They divided Palestine into two parts and gave one to the jews and one to the Christians and muslims.
This was to stop the bloodshed after a long period of jewish terrorism against the Palestinian population and the British administration.
The christians and muslims were not consulted about this and refused to accept this resolution.
The jews attacked the christians and muslims in 1948 and grabbed as much land as they could , anybody who resisted was massacred. They then declared the State of Israel.
Most of the jews who did this were illegal immigrants from Europe.

The UN made a Partition Proposal that gave Palestinians areas that were arranged such that Israel felt their 'homeland' was being split up. They refused to accept the proposal and instead declared themselves a state, thereby displacing and making refugees of scores of Palestinians.
