The US does not have a uniform standard of living in part because it is so big and geographical diverse,. The north east coastal region has a population comparable to large European countries, and probably has the highest living standards in the world, but many regions do not do nearly as well, so we average less than Norway.

According to the HDI, Norway has the highest standard of living. US ranks at number 8, behind Canada (6) and Japan (7), but above Switzerland (9)
