All that pressure to spend, spend, spend on gifts for people you never see and/or don't really like. Do you know, most department stores had their holiday merchandise out on HALLOWEEN? I hate Christmas for this reason. Who else thinks the holidays are way too commercialized?

Don't misunderstand me-- I don't spend my money frivolously just because we're made to feel like we SHOULD. I hate that most children now equate Christmas ONLY with getting an overabundance of gifts. And I hate the subtle implication that you should buy, buy, buy to show your love.

And Daniel-- did you not read my entire post? I didn't ask anything about what to buy.

I love Christmas. I only buy gifts for people I care about and like. I love being off of school for two weeks and getting to finally relax. I do agree with you that holidays are too commercialized. Walmart had their Christmas decorations out before Halloween, and currently, they're playing Christmas music in there. It's not even December!

I just answered a question like this. Here, I've copied and pasted my answer:

I don't hate Christmas but I get very depressed at Christmas time. I know I'll never have enough money to get my family all the things they want and I can't stand seeing all the ads on tv showing them the things they won't be getting again this year. I try to instill in them that it's about the birth of Jesus and the celebration of His life, but we live in such a commercialized society that they feel kind of out of place for not having all the latest gadgets and brand name clothing and accessories. My kids aren't greedy and neither am I. I just see so many people with all these new things and I feel bad that they won't have them. Also, I will not have money to get my husband anything nice again this year. That always makes me feel bad. He takes good care of me all year and I feel bad because there's just never enough for me to get him something really special. Yes, Christmas depresses me every year. I can't wait til it's over!

As a Christian,I celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ on 25th December. It is very meaningful.I love Christmas but it has become far too commercialised.Gift-giving during Christmas time has become a worrisome experience for many people. Most people go off & try to get so many things without really knowing the meaning of Christmas. The greatest gift of all is Jesus Christ.

WOW, I thought I was the only one who dreaded the holidays. What a comforting thought to know that others agree. Just this evening when I walked into the supermarket and saw all the trees and other holiday paraphernalia in the store lobby, my first thought was can't they even wait until Thanksgiving is over before they assault us with the message to buy, Buy, BUY!!!

I think it's terrible that the retailers decided to start the holiday shopping season before Halloween. It used to start on the day after Thanksgiving.

I have already informed all my family & friends that due to my employment situation (laid-off) that nobody will be getting anything from me, and I am not expecting any gifts from anyone either.

I agree with you. It is a hell of a lot of pressure to save and then spend the right amount of money for the gifts. It's also way too early for Christmas to be advertised.

I agree that they are WAY too commercialized... my family gets together to enjoy time with each other.... we do a gift exchange... you buy one gift for ONE other person.... even the kids are cool with it, granted they are a bit older now, but... the best part about the Holidays for us is spending time with each other, because we live apart from each other...

i completely agree about the riduculous commercialization of major holidays. we haven't even had thanksgiving yet, but everywhere you look it's christmas! i think everyone needs to slow down and chill out.. anyway, i'm excited for thanksgiving AND christmas only because i love being with my family, and i love food! it's not about the gifts, and as soon as people realize and accept that, they'll have relaxing, joyful holidays.

p.s. it sounds like you need a hug. here's one from me!! :D

I hate the holidays, my husband and I have tried to hide (go out of town) for many years, but that makes it worse. Our relatives really try to make us feel guilty (where's their holiday spirit). So, year after year we just grin and bear the next 6 weeks. We have the rest of the year to relax without all of the hub-bub. SMILE. You'll survive :o)
