I'm an Undeclared/Undecided student and I have absolutely no clue what I want to do. Everything seems interesting and the majors I am interested in is sadly not offered as a major in my school, only as minors. Just want to know how other people got inspired to choose their current/past major.

I first did music because I'm a musician and that's what we do. While I was studying music I took some classes in the theater department in technical theater (costume construction and design) and liked them a lot. So I got a degree in that too.

Then I decided that I needed to be more marketable in the world and would like to learn some business so I started my MBA and while I was doing that I found out I really like organizational psychology and statistics, so I changed from the MBA to the MA in Human Resources Development and wrapped that degree. Since I still need to know some more about business, I returned to the MBA but I have decided that I'd really like to expand my consulting into public speaking at an upper corporate level so I'm taking graduate communications courses... One day I might get all done.

For me, the first major was a no-decision thing. Music is what I do and has been for 27 years. The other areas all came to me while taking a class in the basics of whatever it was and saying "hey, this stuff is really cool"; I picked up a minor in sociology because the study of the social condition of humanity intrigues me.

What I'd suggest, if you have no idea now, is to simply take the lower level core classes in many fields until you find one that speaks to you.

Some people will tell you to pick based on what pays well. Fact is, anything you're passionate about can pay well and anything you hate doing can pay poorly. Find something you can get passionate about.

From experience, please please think carefully.

I got into a nationally renowned university for a nationally renowned program. At that time, I enrolled just because it was something I was good at and was prestigious.

Now that I'm out, and have been working for a few years in the field. I discovered that was NOT what I wanted to do. Might have to start over and do another degree. Only advantage is that I'm a lot richer now but 'wasted' a lot of years.

So try to find your passion! and if you discover midway through school that you have made the wrong decision, change program!

my 2 cents.

good luck!

Take as many different classes as you can, and once you find something you like, take a few more in it. See if it's something you think you could live your life doing. When I started college, I was undecided, but after I took a few Literature courses, I decided I wanted to teach Literature.

I spent five years in college trying to figure out what I wanted to do until I FINALLY listened to my counselor and took a course she recommended. This was a course was for students like yourself - undecided.
This course consisted of many tests to help determined what type of personality I had and what careers matched well with my personality. From this course I took a class to try out one of the recommended careers for my personality and guess what? Bingo! that was it ! and that's what I majored in and I am happy working in this field. Check if your college has a course like this one I have described.
