i had a similar problem on my g/f car... just had some air in the cooling system... bled it all out and good as new.... start simple and check coolant level and start the car and turn the heat on high with the radiator cap off and let the car run for 15 to 20 mins to get up to temp...once the thermostat opens it will circulate the coolant and push the air out... highly doubt it is a thermostat as that would cause the temp to stay low for a long period of time or overheat.... but they are generally cheap so depending on mileage you might want to replace it anyways....good luck with it

Sounds like a restriction in the cooling system, possibly the heater core. Your coolant only flows sufficiently through the system when the water pump speeds up with the engine speed. Is the engine overheating or running warmer than normal? You could try a cooling system flush, but if that doesn't work, you will have to pay a shop to properly repair it. Hope this helps

I would suggest that the coolant level is low.My first check would be coolant level, once the engine has cooled down completely.please be reminded that the cooling system operates under pressure thereby you can easily get scalded if you attempt to check the coolant level when the engine is still hot.

With little info. given, I would suspect the thermostat has been removed, it is stuck open or it opens at very low temp.
