The French and Indian War took place before the American Revolution. The English and the Colonists fought a war against the French. The French were in Canada at the time. You know Quebec. The French had Native Americans on their side and the British had other Native American tribes on their side. The war determined who gained control over Canada, although it was fought on both sides of the border. If the French had won, we Americans would now be speaking French. It was an important war in the history of North America. Didn't you ever read The Last of the Mohegans.

If your writing a paper you should definitely include this interesting tidbit; when the English defeated the French, who were forced to sign the treaty of Paris, the French were given a choice between keeping one of their two primary colonies. On the one hand was the tiny sugar producing island of Martinique, and on the other was the entire Canadian territory. The French opted to ditch the second largest country on the face of the planet in favor of a tiny island, and that's how the English got Canada dump on them.
