honestly in past years alot of lesbians married polygamists for the respectability and so they didn't have to be with him that often.
In recent times its because they are raised that way for a very young child the girls are told who they may marry and they don't know to fight it. Alot of our current day polygamists just swap daughters when they are old enough to wed.
I am sure you keep tabs on the Warren Jeffs case with all the outrage of what he did it still did not bring immediate action to raise our marriage age which would have helped stop this.
By the time a woman is 18 she is much more willing to fight for herself than when she is 14 and pressured.

What I don't understand is that feminism seems to favor homosexual "marriages" with the explanation that what people do behind closed doors is their business but fail to hold this same principle when it comes to polygamy.

Then the matter of "choice" comes into play as well. Even though it is probably true that most people would not choose polygamy, restricting other's choices is not a "choice" at all but rather a legal mandate to adhere to the "correct" choice.

How about a man who marries a woman and also wants a "husband" as well. Is that permissible? (Or a woman who wants a husband and a "wife" at the same time?)

What is really hypocritical, if not downright funny, is that it is NOT illegal to have many wives. It is only illegal to have more than one *at the same time*. A man (or woman) can divorce as many times as they choose and remarry as many times as they want. Is polygamy really so different? If one is against polygamy, shouldn't the practice of remarriage after divorce also be just as wrong and for the same or similar reasons?

Its most common usage is found as part of the culture and tradition of Islam . The richer you are , the more wives you can afford . Of course they need a reason such as " My wife only gave me 2 children in 3 years " In many cases they are entitled to marry a sister of the same family . If there are no unwed sisters they have the right to find a second , third or fourth wife .
I believe the usual accepted limit is 4 wives . However, the elites usually have an exemption just like our politicians and diplomats are exempt from
many rules , taxes and otherwise mandatory programs .

.

The modern polygamists in the U.S. are not affiliated with Mormon Church .
The Mormons used it briefly during the 1800's when half of the men died in battles with Native Americans , protestants , thieves , ect .

Many women were widowed and some men took
another wife .

It's understandable, because you were brought up in a culture/society and with certain beliefs of which polygamy is not the norm, but someone of another culture or with different beliefs may feel the same way about monogamy, or view polygamy as normal. So, it's relative to each individual.
To me, whether people are polygamous or not makes no difference, I think that each relationship has their own method and conditions that are suitable and works for them, what's fulfilling for me in a relationship may not be the same for another person.

Good night hon. :-)

There are societies in which the women have multiple husbands. I just saw a special on it on National Geographic channel the other day.

There are advantages to multiple spouses - extra income, extra child care, extra help for everything.

As for why anyone would want to do that, I guess it's just permitted by either their society or their religion - and in the case of their religion it's that they pretty much HAVE to, according to the religion. And by the time you have generations growing up that way, they don't think it's wrong, or that there is anything wrong with it.

Personally, my opinion is "each to their own". One man, one woman, two women, two men, multiple spouses, whatever -- It doesn't bother me, it doesn't impact my life or anyone else's except the people involved, so I tend to be of the viewpoint of keeping my nose out of other people's business.

polygamy in some areas is actually used as a way to threaten and control womens behavior (like in the ME)

however, I have been in relationships that included one man and 3 women(myself included in that)
part of the way that worked is that we all loved each other. I loved the other women and had a relationship with them as well as a realtionship with him.

bytheway: I never thought I would say this, but for once I agree with you. will wonders never cease.

Many of you here have a very historically naive perception of polygamy. And for those who call themselves Christians, and have a problem with polygamy, should also have very big problem with many of the major characters mentioned in the bible. Polygamy was the sociological standard upon much of the world's existence has been built. In fact, it is only in very recent history that polygamy has somehow fallen out of favor, but mostly in western societies. It was the dissolution of polygamy in Africa by Christian missionaries, that led to the nearly complete destruction of that continent's social fabric. The explosion of AIDS there is directly the result those imposed of pseudo-Christian values. Many of the groups that once thought their proselytizing actions there were appropriate, have since recanted. But the damage has been irrevocably done. We are only seeing the effects of this to a lessor degree here in this country.

As far as the nonsense about woman collecting. That shows the highest level of ignorance. Now, while the recent examples of polygamy seem to be so far out of the norm of civility, let me remind you, that the illegalization of any conduct tends to cause what would otherwise have been safely socially manageable, no longer so. If the relationships themselves weren't deemed abnormal, and it's adherents treated as criminals, many of the ills that come from stigmatization would not play a role in the manner those who choose it could/would navigate in society. Secrecy has a way of demeaning everything subjected to it.

And rather than waste any more of my time on a discussion about something subject to such vitriol, I am going to stop here.

There are some people for whom this is an acceptable arrangement, and if you consider their motives and what it is they want out of a marriage, it makes sense.

If you were a woman who wanted financial stability, a built-in support network to help you take care of your children when you had other pressing matters to deal with, a less-than-stellar willingness to sexually satisfy your husband on a nightly basis, and girlfriends with whom you could exchange notes about your man, then this is a workable lifestyle.

Belive it or not, some people just don't believe the hype surrounding "soulmates." Go figure.

At this point, with gay marriage becoming an acceptable form of union, I can't see why polygamy is a problem. Bigamy; that is, marriage to two people who are unaware of the other marriage, however, is not only illegal, but should remain illegal.

ok its actually a variation of christianity. the man isn't collecting the women as u put it. They beleive they also marry the other women as well as the man. The point of it is to make sure the kids have many ppl to watch over them. its actually not that unhealthy, ur just misconstruding it into something far worse. although its not entiely acurate there is a show on hbo called "big love" that gives u some insight into it. the many wives thing is all about the kids, not about the sex

Just like there are some women who are into kink, and some who don't mind kissing other girls despite the fact that they are straight, there are some women who just don't mind sharing their man. Another explination is that they were brought up in a faith system based off of male dominance, and woman subservience, In a system such as that, Intellectual questions asking why are generally looked down upon, leaving women to know nothing else.
