Common Argument:
"Psychedelic drugs should be kept illegal because otherwise people will drive under the influence and kill people."

My rebuttal:
Using psychedelic drugs require complete focus and dedication to master, just like playing the violin. But then, why isnt playing the violin made illegal, since if you play the violin while driving you can kill someone?

And besides we have lots of laws against driving under the influence. Obviously these would not change if psychedelic drugs were made legal. And in order to make the initial argument you need proof to show that DUIs would increase, which I have no knowledge of such a case study.

Just critique this argument, lets not bring in any other issues.

I agree with you! Just another way for our wonderful government to control us,and tell us what we can and can't do.I mean come on,it's "our" lives we are talking about. It's their choice not to take anything,we should have the same choice....re:The land of the free...am I right?

you need some work on your logic. it is ok... except that it does not take "complete focus and dedication to master" to do a psychedelic drug, not even in the slightest sense, however you could kill someone if you drove around playin the violin.
the reason they wont do it is because you need to be able to tell how "high" someone is. this must be very specific and quantitative, like a breathalyzer. good to the .000 degree. if a company makes a similar device that could tell the police exactly how high and what drug a person was on AT THE TIME OF THE INFRACTION, then drugs will be legalized, but until then they wont... sorry charlie

Huh? THIS is the argument?

What about those who are drunk, or overmedicated on Prescription drugs, or are distracted and not paying attention.

People are going to do what they damn well please, regardless of the laws (we have laws against murder, but that doesn't stop a lot of people.).

A harder argument to refute would be "psychedelic drugs should be kept illegal, as they do not have consistant effects and how a person is going to react is not always the same. This needs more study."

It makes no sense whatsoever to keep psychedelic drugs illegal. Frankly, I haven't read any reports (ever) of fatal accidents related to the use of psychedelic drugs (though I'm sure there may have been some).
If they don't ban alcohol for that reason, why ban the drug? Good question.

There is no argument against prohibition

drugs are illegal for two reasons

one the rulers of our world do not want us to see how badly we are being duped
which drugs open the mind to see the truth

second, a lot of police, lawyers, judges and jailers would be out of business,,,,,,,,,

I suspect that playing the violin while driving is not legal.

I have never done anything but weed and alcohol. I wanna know why television makes acid look so good?! I watched a special on VH1 that made me want acid...in liquid form. It looked lovely, and peaceful. That day, I woulda done it.
