Since you can have rap without there being hip hop (e.g. in a TV commerical, in a Madonna song), can you have hip hop without the rap? And are there any examples of this?

Rap is music...Hip hop is culture...If their is breaking in a commerical thats hip hop...Turntablism in a commerical thats hip hop...Hip hop style beats in a song thats hip hop. Madonna's-Justify My Love...Sprint's Obey Your Thirst Commerical's are some examples..Mary J Blige sings over hip hop beats...Why she is called the Queen of Hip hop Soul...Graf art in a commerical thats hip hop.

R&B can somethimes be hip hop. Hip hop is more a culture and characteristics rather than a strict music type.

Hip-Hop is actually a culture,which rap is a sub-category of.So there is no such thing officially as hip-hop songs.If you want hip-hop oriented songs you should listen to R'n'B.

All rap is hip hop, however breakdancing, grafitti, and instrumentals are hip hop, but not rap.
