The tipping point was really a combination of things. High taxation, a monarchy that spent money like water, a general famine created by a greedy king. Louis the 16th flaunted his wealth at a time when people were in serious need. Marie Antoinette never said "let them eat cake" but it reflects the general attitude of the monarchy at the time. No money, a diffident ruler who is lavishing himself while you starve is always a tinderbox, politically. It is still too soon to see how it worked out as France is still fighting to regain it's national identity.
