In anaerobic respiration, ATP is produced. Other substances are produced as well, depending upon the organism. In bacteria, anaerobic respiration and anaerobic fermentation both produce ATP, but fermentation produces a wide variety of other compounds. The term anaerobic respiration is often used interchangeably with anaerobic fermentation. In this case, for instance in yeasts, carbon dioxide and ethanol are produced. In humans, anaerobic fermentation produces lactic acid as a product.
