Any of the Toyota pick ups are a good choice. The two wheel drive models get good mileage (cab be as good as 25-27 a gallon depending on your driving habits) and they last a long time. It is not uncommon to see one with 250-300k miles on it and still going.

They don't really make a small pickup any more that's available in the USA. Of all the pickups available, the Ford Ranger is the smallest, and it gets the best gas mileage according to the EPA estimates.

It's a shame, really. They've managed to get the new Japanese pickups down to 14 mpg. The Nissan and Toyota big pickups both got 12 or 13 in a Road and Track test this summer. They don't make 'em like they used to.

I heard from the LA auto show that they will start making hybrid pickups soon. I think it was Dodge pickups.
