He's a great kid, but not naturally gifted in balance or athleticism. The boards all look the same to me .... how much should I expect to spend for a decent one? Thanks so much....

BRAKES!!! LOL.
a quality one and get the gear, knee pads, wrist pads,
elbow pads and a helmet.
Have someone with knowledge of skateboards go over
a few basics with him. A skateboard /sports stores
would be a great place to talk to someone with
experience.

I grew up in San Diego, CA and wow skateboarding was
great fun and I loved the speed. Of course I was one
of four girls in our house so I did not tell parents and
got on a friends board. I flew off and landed on my
butt and got hooked!!!
Skateboard parks are a good place to practice
safely.

You should try the Wave board, it is surfing, skateboarding, and roller blading combine it is hard but fun once you get accustomed to it.

knee and elbow pads and plenty of supervision. learn to ride WITH your kid. invest the time. go to skatepark with him and learn together. don't worry, most of them don't stick with it and never learn to do it. if he does, make sure you do, too. gives you something in common.
