Well if he was a friend then you wouldnt be asking this question b\c you'd do it regardless.
Be there from them as you would for any of your friends b\c if you didnt then hes probably thinking well you werent really a friend in the first place if thats what you think of me.

My thoughts about the homeless is that they are substance abusers. But I've found a lot of normal people living out of their cars or sleeping under the overpass. And it gets cold during the winter.
I don't like to give people money, because I don't know if they're going to gamble, have sex, buy booze or drugs. I want to help with food & shelter.
How close a friend is this guy? Is he clean? Why is he homeless? Is he willing to work? If he's willing to work and save money for an apartment of his own, I would be tempted to allow him to stay for a set period of time. Two weeks. Or four weeks, period no extensions. But do check his record first. Make sure you're not letting a rapist into your house.
P.S. I am assuming you don't have a wife or family. If you do, then you can't let them come into contact at all. Find some other way to help him. Ask him what he feels he most needs right now and give it to him if you can.

People become homeless for a lot of reasons.
Many people are just a paycheck away, especially if they carry a lot of credit card debt or live paycheck to paycheck.
Good companys lay off or fire people everyday.
Apartment fires happen and them may not have the rent and deposit to get a new placeright away.
You can help someone in a lot of non money ways get back on their feet.
Allow them to get mail or phone messages at your address. Offer to wash their clothes or help them do a resume.
Let them know about job openings you think they would be qualified for.
If they are a friend you might even just talk to them and find out if they want to get back into a regular job or apartment.
And try not to look down on them. A lot of us take our positions in life for granted.

yes to get him food, clothes and help to get a job, maybe your friend could stay with you and get together and make his life better for you. he could do your chores anyway till he finds work, homeless friends should not be homeless

if he is your friend then you know why he is homeless. is he lazy? is he capable of working but won't get a job? if so then your opinion of him should not be different just because he is your friend.

If you really were his friend helping him would not be a question it would happen automatically. Maybe giving him money will help you feel better.
