I have a massive virus that opens internet explorer all the time, and i do plan on reformatting my hard drive but until I get the windows CD I have to deal with it.

I was wondering if there was anyway i could just delete internet explorer, or at least keep the process blocked (I use firefox).

By the way I do have anti virus software, and it is just failing at everything.

You can try this, It might not delet IE, but i think it will disable it:
1. Go to Add/Remove Programs
2. On the right hand side, you should see Add/Remove Windows Components, press that.
3. Uncheck IE
4.Press Next
5. Your Done

P.S. This is for WIndows XP.

No, you do not want to delete IE as it is too intertwined with the windows operating system. I also use Firefox but to delete IE will only cause problems with many other OS resources. Reformatting in most cases is overkill, I certainly hope that the anti virus software you have is not the "free" type... If it is free then you got what you have paid for. If you have a reputable Paid av and it is up to date, get a hold of their tech line and they should help you with your virus problem. Good Luck ;)

Have you updated your anti-virus daily or weekly? Just having an anti-virus is not good enough, you have to keep the anti-virus most update (at least virus definition)

It seems that you have two web-browsers. (IE & Firefox) Both are in the worst situation under recent plug-in attach.

Try to update your anti-virus and do a full scan.

Then, try to browse microsoft.com/security to do a security update. Possibly, you may eliminate the malware.

You might not actually have a virus. I'd bet money it's spyware.

Many spyware programs inform you you have a horrible virus, and for a fee you can download their program to "fix" it. (which actually installs more garbage.

Probably the best spyware killer out there is "spybot search and destroy": http://www.safer-networking.org/ Every computer should have it (and it's free). Might just save you a reformat.

go thru the steps detailed on this website.

also, this might be a nice time to try ubuntu linux and never have to worry about spyware again. Since you are already planning on reformatting, why not give it a try. At the very least you'll have a trouble free machine for the internet until you get windows again.

Forget Microsoft's CD, because you will just get more virii as it is a virus magnet. Go and download www.kubuntu.org as it does not attract 114,000 virii that infects Microshaft.
