baby is delivered in water them removed shortly after. The baby is floating in amniotic fluid for 9 months and gets its oxygen and food from the umbilical cord. So as long as baby is still attached through umbilical cord they do not need to "breathe". It is supposed to be easier on the baby to be delivered in water. I think it is gross though like addison said there is blood, fluid and fecal matter that comes out during childbirth and thats all in the water with you. Ick!

The baby was in "water" before it came out and it instinctively knew what to do. Babies lose that ability shortly after birth.

It's supposedly easier on the baby. From womb fluids to water to air. Apparently from womb to air is a shock. err... something like that...

because the baby is used to being surrounded by water in the sac already.

Baby is coming from fluids. Of course, you don't keep the infant underwater!
