alrighty i got (2) 120mm fans, and a 80mm fan.my CPU does'nt have a built in fan so i just placed one of the 120mm Fans next to the cpu heatsink so that it blows air to the back of my case, where the next 120mm fan sucks the air out.i have a micro BTX case so it's small.i took off my cpu heatsink (big mistake) i know,to see if i can clean up the dust.but then it hit me,i had removed the thermal paste.my cpu normally hung around 85-95 F when idle (before i took out the heatsink).and around 100-105 F when under load.but now since i took off the heatsink the idle temp rose to 100F and under load around 115 F (max).did my cpu get hotter because of the thermal paste that was taken off?i put the heatsink back.im planning on getting a new heatsink with a built-in fan from newegg.

Your cpu temp is ok for now, but I would recommend getting a some thermal paste and a heatsink and fan combo asap. Like waznnathan said, I would get Arctic Silver for you thermal paste. I hear it works wonders on bring the temp down. Here are the reviews off of newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835100007

The heatsink you have there will work, and work fine if you have the room.

Yes the CPU will always run very hot if the thermal paste is not placed on well enough, or the CPU has none. In fact, without the thermal paste, your computer would crash before even getting to boot up your OS, or mine did because of the emergency shut down mode I had on it. If you CPU is idling over 55C (~122F), then you have a problem, idling at 50C is ok, lower than 45C is perfect. Best paste to use is Arctic Silver I believe, or at least I would recommend it.

A form of solidified thermal paste is there on a new heatsink, but I think you do need cleaning alcohol to clean out the crubs left over by ripped out the old.

For used heatsink thermal paste can still be bought separately but this is not it since you are buying new.

Heatsink and thermal work hand in hand don't try to run without those, put your rig in temporary layoff until you got those ready.

Thermal paste are almost a necessity, actually i think the are a req. Any way any thermal paste will do the job, you need to get the fan heat sink and paste back in place. the heat sink is one of the most important item since i imagine you know the heat sink disperses the heat over a larger area and with the help of the fan maintains your CPU at a decent temperature.

So to cut it short get that heat sink fan and paste back inplace.

yes you need the thermo paste on the cpu and you do need the correct heat sink and fan for that system
