Check your device manager...

go to Start > Control Panel > open "System".

Once in the System Properties click the "hardware" tab and then the "Device Manager" button. Once the device manager opens look for any red x's or yellow exclamation points. If there are some try and post back what's listed. That means there's a problem with the software that runs your hardware (device driver) and you will need to go to your computer manufacturer's website or the component manufacturer's website to download the correct software.

after checking sound drivers and repairing, if not working install a sound card PCI. A basic card is $20. To diagnose sound issue, go to "start" then "run", type " dxdiag " in run box and ok, this will bring you to the direct x diagnosis page, test your sound there.
