Violence against women has been compared to a Holocaust -

http://www.digitalnpq.org/archive/2006_spring/21_ali.html

excerpt:
Between 113 million and 200 million women around the world are demographically “missing.” Every year, between 1.5 and 3 million women and girls lose their lives as a result of gender-based violence or neglect. As The Economist, which reported on the DCAF paper, put it last November, “Every two to four years the world looks away from a victim count on the scale of Hitler’s Holocaust.”

(also, see her bulleted list of factors for some explanations - too many to list here)

In this article, the author calls on Western women to unite and fight this human rights abuse.

Were you aware of the severity of the problem? What do you think people can do to help solve it?

Do you think international pressure or shame or something else would work?

as the article points out, it's men's violence against women. women cause little violence to other women. of course, in some cases, women help perpetuate it due to culture & tradition.

both men & women have to work towards solving this problem - fortunately, many men have been helping, so nobody's calling men villians, we're saying this is a problem & society needs to solve it.

Violence agst women is the #1 killer of women 14-44. Disease, accidents & suicide is #1 killer of men in the same age range.
While I'm against violence in general, I am deeply concerned about women.
Again, not an us-vs-them thing. I have worked side-by-side with men on this issue. You don't want to help - that says alot about you. As for me, it's a priority in my life & I appreciate all the men working to help solve this issue. I certainly think women have always helped men injured by violence- nursing them back to health & so forth.

the "women are perps of violence to men" argument - sure, like I said, i am against all violence. what amazes me is that there is more male-to-male violence yet you focus on women-on-men. why is that?

also, we all know men are victims of violence- see it in the news everyday. most research & surveys on violence focus on men. not much is done re: women. we only just got laws (dv & rape & mass rape as a war crime) in the 70s- not very long, is it?

my interest lies in women. if it were children, the elderly, animals, i wouldn't be attacked, would i? but somehow, i have a concern about violence agst women - a monumental issue- and i'm attacked for not thinking about men. do you attack those in child abuse for not caring about adults? those for the elderly for not caring about the young?

it's a very curious thing, you're empathy is only given if men are involved.

I knew this but it is not going to find its way into mainstream journalism due to the US not wanting to make enemies -

As for the snide remark "Typically no mention of men accept as villains." If men would step forward THIS would not exist. Its men who are doing the killing.

The article man be correct but the cure is no where near what you express it to be. Abuse is a learned problem, dad did it so I do it, because it is OK. No man in his right mind would raise a hand to a woman. Women rarely raise her hand to a man. Besides murder, drugs and robbery the next biggest group in jail are abusers who killed their spouses. The largest problem is the women who say they love him and won't report them. They feel that this punishment is something that they earned.

The only cure if you will, is if more people would report this abuse to authorities. Friends, neighbors, relatives, and victims must stand up. Laws must be changed to allow lesser proof to convict. Sentences should be longer and an automatic divorce should be part of the sentence.

International pressure does not work on Iran, how do you think it would help on the proplem?

I think we should save that term for THE Holocaust. As far as I know, there is no massive effort to wipe out women, Blacks, gays, or any other group. There is hatred and violence to be dealt with - but that's not the same as literally rounding people up and shooting them or gassing them. It drives me insane to hear about "The Black Holocaust", and now you want to stretch the meaning even more? Give me a break. There are other terms that are more accurate. Slavery was not an effort of mass genocide - although it was detestable and led to grave human rights abuses. Violence against women? Also detestable. Also not "A Holocaust".

The difference between this and the Holocaust is that nobody is trying to round up all the women on a continent and pushing them into ovens. Nonetheless, it is disgusting, and I think more should be done to end violence all over the world.

Instead of making everything a them verse us argument, you would find that making it an everybody argument, you may get more validity.

Typically no mention of men accept as villains.

No... what im saying is if you stick to women only as the victim, then you can count me out and a hell of alot of other people from helping out. Men are victims to from women purps. But for what ever reason, there is allways a women only victim mentality. So fight it yourself

don't forget, this is usually violence done by members of their own families. hard to bring international pressure into one little house in one little village in the middle of nowhere.
