Okay well, I am trying out for the school play "Grease" I have seen the movie only once. But I am not sure who to go out for.

I was thinking Jan from Pink ladies. I am in 8th grade, we have our HS and MS combined wich really sucks, because usually the highschoolers get the best parts.

Can someone tell me what Jan does in the play?

As you've already been told, the musical and the film are different. Way different actually. Jan is actually a pretty cute role. Roger is in love with Jan and they sing the song "Mooning" together which is one of (if not THE) highlights of the show. Jan sings in many songs but I believe most notably in Mooning and It's Raining on Prom Night. She's a mezzo so the song you choose should be in that range as well. She's generally a bit chubby (some descriptions say compulsive eater), nice and funny.

Even though it's popular right now and usually that's a no-no, yours is a school audition... I'd go for something from Hairspray. Pretty much anything Tracy sings would be fine.

good luck!

First of all -- to correct someone, Jan does not sing It's Raining on Prom Night. Cha-Cha does.

Jan's an adorable part. She's loud and pushy with the girls but is clueless on how to act with boys. She's a compulsive eater -- she's always stealing someone's food. She really means well. Her main feature is the duet with Roger, "Mooning," but she doesn't sing too much in that song. It's a good character role that would be especially good for a good actress.

If singing's your forte, go out for Marty. Marty's the leader of the Pink Ladies in a sense; she's the beauty and always has a boyfriend. She sings the song "Freddy, My Love," which is a really nice song. Marty can be played many different ways, so if you weren't the best actress, it could be a good part for you.

But I'm going to be honest with you. You shouldn't get your hopes up. If you're up against high schoolers, they're probably going to get the parts. As a junior who's been waiting for my chance to shine for years, I can tell you that seniority counts. It's obnoxious, I know: I've been told to wait since freshman year. But your moment will come. I promise!

That being said, I don't know how many people, or how talented the people are, try out for the shows. You would know how good a chance you have. If so, Jan's a great part. So are any of the Pink Ladies, really. Or Patty Simcox, if your acting is better than your singing.

Break a leg!!

The movie and the play are different from each other. I know this because I was in Grease in college. I must say that it was the worst show I ever did. Not because of the show; but because none of us could sing or dance worth a darn! It was fun but looking back on it I can say that I wish I would have sat that one out.
As to your question about Jan, I don't remember that role a whole bunch. When you audition just remember to warm up your voice beforehand, and project well so the people in the back row of the auditorium can hear you.
Whatever you sing for the auditon make sure you have a chance to rehearse it several times before you get there. If you're nervous just remember that the more prepared you are at your audition the less have to be nervous about. Concentrate on your audition piece and you'll forget there are people out there watching you. Break a leg. I hope you get a good role! Most of all, have fun with it.

The Crucible. it is tremendously dramatic. A View from the Bridge, yet there is only like seven characters. A Raisin interior the sunlight, yet it is small too. Glass Menagerie yet it is actual small. 4 characters. Spoon River Anthology. however the Crucible is tremendously stable. additionally- you ought to get a loose screenwriting utility like Celtx and make your individual play version of phantom of the opera with out music, or such.
