This is generally a multi-personality. A person who had experienced trauma as a young child and who has not had the time and nurturing to INTEGRATE those different personalities around her. Then under pressure, they shift from one personality to another under different circumstances=--for survival. They are unable to adapt to different situations, but relay upon incorporated personalities, usually those of mother, father, caretakers.
