Let's see if I can help you out here since I'm a ♥Texas♥ native! Keep the name Texas and here's some silly names that rhyme or sound similar to the name Texas: Hexes Mexes Nexes Sexes (just in case you can't keep Texas and have to rename it, few more suggestions for you)! Rexes Dexes Flexes Lexes Exes Plexes But the person that named Texas in regions like East Texas, West Texas, North Texas, South Texas, etc. was pretty much right on the money. It is a really big state to cover. I hope this is a bit of help for you with your assignment! Good luck to you, hun! :-)

Texas comes from the word "teysha" meaning "hello friend" in the language of the Caddo Indian tribes. Spanish explorers and settlers used this word to refer to the friendly tribes throughout Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas.
Texas, the Lone Star State, is a giant of a state. And Texans are known for their large, welcoming hearts. "Friendship" is the state's motto, and the people of Texas live by that motto.
I have a wife she's from Texas and I'm from Philippines.

I believe that Texas was first called Tejas ( a spanish word -I think) and then later called Texas as it was easier to pronounce.
