I want to own my own domain completely. My question is how can these sites such as godaddy.com and others sell domains? Do they own their domain with no monthly payments? Who does this where you have to pay monthly fees for domains? Shouldn't you be able to buy it with a one time fee.

You can buy the right to the name for a single payment. Your next step is to have it licensed by the registrars who were setup by the government to do that. They are the ones who charge you a yearly fee to keep track of your ownership and to keep any crooks from claiming your site name.

Think of it like your car and its license plate. You bought the car and own it. But you still need to re-register it each year to keep it on the road legally.

There was a big fight over the site SEX.COM where someone grabbed that name from its owner and turned it into a porn site. After years in the courts the rightful owner collected millions from the con artist who stole it. Site names are a big money business.

For a complete package including Domain Name Registration and your own website, have a look at http://www.startyourownwebsite.net/site/ for around $75 a year which includes everything you need such as backgrounds, image galleries and easy to follow instructions. Direct uploads without FTP or codes. Also excellent support. My web site for our Historical Society (as an example) is at

More information here ..

Godaddy is a reseller and you buy the domain on a yearly basis .. They also have to pay a fee and they get commissions for the sales.
