Hello. I am looking for a laptop under $700 (actually, $600 hopefully), and it's slim pickin's out there. I would use it to do computer journaling (as opposed to writing), tinker and view digital images, listen to music, etc. I'd like it to have a full gig of ddr2 memory, a hard drive over 80gb, burn dvd's and cd's, Vista home basic is sufficient, etc I looked at a Dell Inspiron, had it configured to cost $689... but Dell KILLS you with overpriced extended warranty. I need input soon please. Thank you.

first thing you need to do is some research, into the companies you're thinking of buying from... cheap is not always the best..

you need to check out the after sales service of every computer company, that is what matters the most to you.

you will find that Dell have a very poor after sales service. the same goes for most big named manufactures,

you need to be looking at a Acer,Sony,or Toshiba, Next you also need to check out windows Vista, it as big security problems.

To keep your cost down checking out a Linux operating system. everything comes Free. all the software you will ever need Free to download. and you can do more with Linux than you can with Windows Vista Premium.

Now to try out Linux, download the Live cd from the websites below. you can run Linux from a live cd without installing onto your computer. untill you get used to it.. you can also go on the internet using the live cd.. you can't do that with any version of windows.

for your own sake check out Linux... Dell, Hp and Compaq are now pre-installing Linux..

Dell are using Red Hat and Ubuntu Linux for their business system servers.. but don't advertise that to the general public
just food for thought

or research the websites for yourself

there are only 2 agencies that make severe gaming laptops. Alienware, and Dell's XPS line. $1500 isn't a good funds the two. you will get a hell of a gadget for that fee.
