Okay, some of you have probably read my previous question "R13 vs. E11." My parents and I decided that the R13 is a better quality clarinet and is worth the extra money. So I talked to this woman who sells clarinets and she has three choices for me: a festival R13 and two vintage model R13s, all within my price range.

My question is what is the difference between a festival and a vintage model? Is there really that big of a difference between the two? I know the vintage appearantly better, but how?

Any [positive] comments welcome!
Thanks!

Vintage is the name of the model - not the age. ☺

The differences aren't significant but at this level the only way to make your decision is to play them (with your mouthpiece and the one on it). Some people really like the festival (comes in greenline too) and others are sticking to the vintage. Some people swear by the RC Prestige as well.

The vintage is designed along the lines of the 1950s clarinets of the Goodman and Shaw era of clarinet playing. They are known to be incredibly responsive to fast fingers. The festival has more modern design features developed over the last 60 years and isn't as fast to respond but is more forgiving of small mistakes.

Any one of these (R13) you pick will take you through college. The real deciding factor should be which one you enjoy playing the most. As you play them, you will find that one of them just feels right to you. That's your instrument.

Look anything vintage is just a good old clairnet. but as long as it has been properly cared for it is a good investment.

Where as the Festival is more up scale clairinet that is more recoginized for it's depth of sound. And is usally sought after by more professionals.

So personally my choice if I was still playing would be the festival.
