I have Comcast "high speed internet" and the connection is extremely poor. I don't care if it's all dependent on the number of people using the internet, they still shouldn't make those commericials that diss DSL, since DSL will rpe Comcast in internet speed any day. Anyways the problem is, the internet is pretty good actually at some times, but almost very frequently, the internet just shuts off and they secretly switch you to using a free internet service, which is slower. So I'm saying they're frauds. What do you think of it?

Cable internet all works the same way, no matter what provider you choose. It comes in from the street on the same coax line that provides the TV signal, telephone, and High speed internet (HSI). From the street it is linked to a demarcation point or D-mark box on the side of your house or under. If you live in an apartment, it differs slightly. At the D-mark they split the signal and transfer the appropriate signal to each device, i.e. modem, TV, cable box, DVR. The modem is then hooked up to your computer or router. This signal has to remain clean, dedicated and unsplit. That means I hope they haven't placed a splitter to hook up a TV as well. HSI should have its own dedicated line. Splitting it can cause major problems.

Enough with that techno mumble jumbo. My first question is, what is it you mean by free internet service? Is your computer picking up an unsecured WiFi signal? Most computers will search for a signal when they have lost their connection. If you are picking up WiFi, Comcast does not provide this. I have never worked for Comcast, but I have never heard of any internet service provider giving away free internet. I am going to assume that is what you are talking about when you say free internet. If not, add more details and I can answer that more thoroughly.

Your connection dropping in and out can be caused by many different things and can be hard to diagnose without seeing it first hand. (That means without me seeing it.) It will most likely never resolve itself and you should get someone out there right away to check it out. When you call be prepared to talk to the most uneducated, unprofessional, idiotic people you will ever have the displeasure of meeting. These people get paid to lie, cheat, and steal. Basically they will tell you that it is your problem and it will cost you to fix it OR they will say they see what the problem is, (then punch away at their computer), and tell you everything is resolved. This is a lie, No one... and I mean no one can fix the signal from a computer. Without seeing everything about your individual set-up they can only guess. And even with that, they would still need to be at least on your street to move the signal up or down. I would demand a technician, (in house), which means someone who is employed by them personally, NOT EVER a contractor. Contractors get paid by the job... so it's always -"get in and get out". In house techs can spend as much time as needed as they get paid by the hour. So you see they can take the time needed and it's always more personal.

I can make a list of everything I have seen cause the internet to go out, be slow, or have intermittent connection. That list would be long and would include...

MODEM is bad. SIGNAL is low OR high. Return is too high or too low. Bad cable. Too many splits. Bad connectors. Scratched center conductor. Impedance. Drop is bad. Ethernet cable or USB cable has gone bad or is shorting out. Your NIC card (located inside your computer) is bad... this usually follows after lightning storms, and is caused by bad grounding or very close strikes. I could go on and on... and every house is different. I would say that 65-70% of the time it is caused by bad signal to the modem.

Long story short, have a tech come out and test everywhere. He/She should take an at least an hour checking every connection.

Good Luck. I would go on and on, but I am tired. If you add more details I can check back and answer accordingly.

Lol. if you have a problem with comcast why not just go switch to dsl or something slower. a lot of the internet speed depends on where you are and how many web browsers are open and CPU usage. comcast is wonderful. we've had it forever and even through wireless it runs great.

Yes, a friend of mine tried the triple play and was caught with the bait-and-switch tactic so now they are paying twice as much for really lousy service.
