Half of the planet. The equator divides the northern hemisphere from the southern. Where east and west are concerned, the divisions are arbitrary, but generally everything from the Greenwich meridian to the International Date line is considered the western hemisphere. (Going westward, of course.)
Even though Europe is considered "western," most of it is east of the Greenwich meridian. But like I said, what we consider the western or eastern hemisphere is arbitrary, and a matter of convention. Since the Greenwich meridian, (the prime meridian), and the International Date Line have been designated as 0 degrees and 180 degrees longitude, respectively, then most of Europe is in what we would consider the eastern hemisphere. So is most of Africa.

Hemisphere is a geographical term meaning half.
Earth is divided into the following hemispheres:
The Eastern hemisphere, the Western hemisphere, the Northern Hemisphere, the Southern Hemisphere, the Land hemisphere, and the Water hemisphere.

The East and West are divided by the Prime Meridian, and North and South are divided by the equator.
The Land Hemisphere contains the largest piece of land and its centered near Nantes, France. The Water Hemisphere is where most of the water is, that contains the Pacific, the Atlantic, and the Indian oceans.

Hemi - half.
Sphere - globe.
So a hemisphere is half of the globe.
The most common (and geographically logical) hemispheres are the North and the South hemispheres, separated by the equator.
