The net force is their difference, exerted in the direction of the larger force.

Net force is the difference between the two forces.

So do 221-186.
You get 35.

So the answer is 35 Newtons positive =]
I'm in physics right now & I'm doing the exact
same thing. Sucks, doesn't it? lol.

You've got 2 horizontal forces in opposite directions. There the net force is the difference of the two forces:

221N - 186N = 35N

as for the direction, it is in the same direction as the larger force always, always, always. So in this case its in the direction of 221N which is the positive direction.

Your answer is 35N in the positive direction
