I have heard that on a tour there but have not been able to find any reference to this on the web. So any suggestions of where to look or links would be great.

I'm sure they could hear the fudge being packed.

I have heard some of the ex prisoners talk about being able to hear the people in San Francisco, especially around Christmas.
That made their incarceration worse because they could hear, and maybe smell families and the holidays.

I've been on the Alcatraz tour a couple of times, but don't remember hearing that.

I've also been to the Ghirardelli factory store (not the factory itself), but don't believe anyone told me that.

I would definitely believe it, though, since the factory is right across the water. If the breeze was blowing the right way, it might have been all they could smell...poor things, it must have been torture!

It gets so foggy that I doubt that they could smell the chocalate through all that fog, I know that they do say that on the tours once in awhile, but I would have to smell it to believe it, other wise everyone out there on the tour could smell it.

Yes they could. They could also hear parties on New Year's Eve.
