My husband doesn't do to bad in the market. It's when he goes into the drug store and they have a big display of all those products "as seen on tv". It's like he's suddenly a man possessed. He's gotta buy something. And we already know from experience this stuff is crap, but he can't resist. We have the pasta cooker (crap) the little chopper (more crap) and a bunch or other things (too many to list) all of which are crap!! Needless to say I no longer allow him to go in the drug store alone. This has become a huge joke with our family and friends. I think this year for Christmas I might just get him something "as seen on tv".

As long as they have a list and the store personnel has been alerted ahead of time to stir them away from the junk food aisles - and the cookie aisle and there is someone to follow them around and explain that some items are on sale and it makes more sense to buy those than the one sitting next to it that is $2 more - then by all means. :-)
Seriously if the last man in my life went shopping he would come home with a box of rice, five candy bars, a few apples and ten cans of tuna and cat food and think he had done the shopping for the month.
(cat food for the cat, not for him)
Yet he wolfed down my cooking fast enough -
tentofield shame on you for thinking the kids are the woman's job, thats neanderthal thinking -

I've been shopping "Alone" for years. When I was single, I did my own shopping. Then at 32 I got married and it was deemed that I was not to do the shopping. That was fine because she did most of the cooking, anyway.
After the divorce, I did the shopping for me and the 2 kids (every other week) as well as the cooking. I'm still single, still shopping and still cooking.
I've got some spaghetti in the crock pot as I write. I just gotta do the noodles, French bread and salad and dinner will be ready.... Oh........ and open the Merlot.
Anybody coming to dinner?

Girl not only do I shop alone in the super market but I used to work in one for (17)years. I probably get more healthy thinggs for lees than most people. I know all the retail tricks.
So YES we should be allowed to shop alone.
I also cook, clean and repair things Alone.

OMG LOL, I swear my husband gets lost every time he goes
to the grocery store. I don't see him for a couple of hours at
least. He does all the shopping and store hopping now. I'm
going to have to go one of these days and hop on one of the
electric carts (whee) and give him a hand. He looks at labels
now because he has to, for salt, sugar and fat content. And
when he gets what he has to get, he often will look at other
things that are put into discounted bins. Especially meat. So
he looks those over and checks the weight and sees' if the
mark down price is a good buy. And he tends to do this all
over the store. Or maybe I should say 'stores' as he goes to
more than one when we need to replace things once a month.
Sometimes he'll buy something because it's cheap and then
try to find a way to make it so we'll both eat it LOL. We have
to be frugal now as we can't impulse buy.
Oh, and he loves to do magic tricks for children and some-
times check out girls. He loves a 'captive audience' LOL. So
that may take up more of his time than actual shopping if he
has run to the store to just get a couple of items.
When my husband goes to the store, I think he feels he's on
vacation LOL. But don't all retired men do that?

Men do not put any thought into the process. they see what they want and buy it, price does not usually manner. They are used to the familar. This applies to regular retail shopping as well as groceries. Women look for bargins, read labels, and have an idea of menus and what is needed to prepare those menus. I see a lot of men in the freezer section, as they don't know how to cook, or don't have the time, or don't want to cook, they just want something fast and easy.

Yes, of course. I did not realise how much in years past that I did most of the shopping. Now that my husband is retired I have been helping him learn the art of super market shopping. (smile) By being gracious and letting him do it all
Edit: Gidget to funny (so true)

Of course they should. Men know what they want, they know where it is and they are in and out in five minutes with a week's groceries. Women take forever. If they are encumbered with screaming kids and a mobile phone they are to be avoided at all costs. If the men do the shopping, the supermarket becomes a civilised place.

who will shop for either the divorced or single men if they can't shop on their own. after the wife died 7 years ago if I didn't go to the grocery store " all by myself " I'd have been in a hungry state.

Of course they should. My husband, when he shops, does
a pretty good job. He buys different things than I do, but
sometimes it's interesting. He gets exactly what's on the list
and nothing more. He doesn't shop sales the way I do
though.
