I saw folks refurbishing old iron stoves by sandblasting the rust off, painting them and then putting them back into use. I'd like to get the rust off a few antique irons and other items but wonder if they had value, if that would reduce any sale value.

Generally speaking, unless done very aggressively, media blasting something that is rough cast iron will not damage it.

That said, there are other ways to attack rust: Naval Jelly (phosphoric acid) and electrolytic oxide conversion (what a pro restorer would use on a valuable one).

If it is one of the old clothes irons that used to warmup on top of the stove, I believe they are quite common and not very expensive. Go for it! Call it art, have some fun and don't worry about the cost of a couple $ either way! You may just come up with something beautiful. It doesn't sound useful to anyone the way it is now, so give it a new life. What is there to loose?!

check with a reputable antique dealer before you go sandblasting. Some things are worth more if they are left alone, some are worth more if you fix them. Check them out beofre doing anything so you don't lose their value.

leave it the way it is, because the value will drop. the rust shows how old it is and the materials used are original because now most paints dont rust

You would have to have it appraised at its value as of now and get an estimate appraisal of its worth once restored and decide which is better.
if its worth a lot a professional restorer is probably the best option-

Yes it will reduce the value of it.
Especially if you can tell if it was done.
It has to be done to perfection where no one will notice it.
